HomeMy WebLinkAboutDraft Minutes - Library Board of Trustees - 03/21/2024 - Communications South Burlington Public Library Board of Trustees Communications Committee Minutes DRAFT The South Burlington Public Library Board of Trustees Communications Committee held a regular meeting on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. in the Library Board Room. Members Present: Rebecca Stazi, Chair; Holly Painter, Stacey Pape, Penne Tompkins Members Absent: N/A Staff Members: Jennifer Murray 1. The Chair called the meeting to order at 5:38 p.m. and reviewed the emergency exits. 2. There were no additions or deletions to the posted agenda. No members of the public were present. 3. Approval of February 15, 2024 meeting minutes: Stacey P. made a motion to approve the February 15, 2024 Communications Committee meeting minutes, seconded by Holly P. The committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes. 4. Communications Projects & Planning / Upcoming Amplification Opportunities Committee members discussed upcoming library events in April, May, and June that trustees may staff or help promote, as well as committee initiatives: • CANCELLED: Friends of the Library jazz concert (March 23): This event is cancelled due to snow. Trustees are encouraged to spread the word. • Illuminate Vermont (April 5 and 6): Trustees will staff a table with information about library events and “Read Local” stickers and clings. (Jennifer M. will order more clings/stickers.) Penne T. will design a template for community members to say why they love the library. Photos from this event will be passed along to library staff who run social media accounts. Physical copies can be hung on library walls. • Solar eclipse (April 8): Library is screening space movies in auditorium on April 5. Eclipse glasses are available at library/city hall from March 21. • Library Week (April 7-13): Malinda Lo (author of the Vermont Reads 2023 novel Last Night at the Telegraph Club) will visit on April 9. Hannah Miller (knitter and Instagrammer visiting all VT libraries) will visit library on April 9 and 11. Friends of the Library are doing a poster and balloons, and their book sale is April 12 and 13. • National Poetry Month (April): Events include My Vermont Eyes at Illuminate with Dr. Jolivette (April 6); Holly P.’s Poetry Game Workshop (April 16); a reading with Holly P. and Dan Close (April 29); and regular meetings of the SBPL poetry group. • Kinetic Sculpture (April): South Burlington artist and educator Katie O'Brien will be working with SB middle and high school students to make a kinetic sculpture over the course of the month. • Afternoon Games at the Library (May 16) • June events: Summer reading program’s 2024 theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” Planning is beginning for Juneteenth events. • Baby goats: Date and details are forthcoming for an event involving baby goats in the children’s section. Other topics discussed included: • Social Work intern: UVM article on social work intern’s library placement came out on March 21. Rebecca S. shared it with The Other Paper for possible placement and amplification for the library. • Communications intern updates: No one from the city/police department has responded to Jennifer M. about sharing a communications intern across departments. The committee discussed connecting with UVM’s College of Arts and Sciences and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences about their internship programs. The committee acknowledged and discussed the difficulty of not wanting to overburden library staff with supervising interns. • Jennifer M. requested feedback on new sharing function in library newsletter. Rebecca and Holly mentioned they do not currently receive the newsletter. • Rebecca S. and Holly P. met with staff member Julia, who runs the library’s Instagram. Julia seems to have things well in hand, posting 1-2 times each week as her library hours allow. Holly P. and Julia are coordinating taking photos for “Bookface Friday” with library staff. 5.
