4. Communications Projects & Planning / Upcoming Amplification Opportunities
Committee members discussed upcoming library events in April, May, and June that trustees
may staff or help promote, as well as committee initiatives:
• CANCELLED: Friends of the Library jazz concert (March 23): This event is cancelled due
to snow. Trustees are encouraged to spread the word.
• Illuminate Vermont (April 5 and 6): Trustees will staff a table with information about
library events and “Read Local” stickers and clings. (Jennifer M. will order more
clings/stickers.) Penne T. will design a template for community members to say why
they love the library. Photos from this event will be passed along to library staff who run
social media accounts. Physical copies can be hung on library walls.
• Solar eclipse (April 8): Library is screening space movies in auditorium on April 5. Eclipse
glasses are available at library/city hall from March 21.
• Library Week (April 7-13): Malinda Lo (author of the Vermont Reads 2023 novel Last
Night at the Telegraph Club) will visit on April 9. Hannah Miller (knitter and
Instagrammer visiting all VT libraries) will visit library on April 9 and 11. Friends of the
Library are doing a poster and balloons, and their book sale is April 12 and 13.
• National Poetry Month (April): Events include My Vermont Eyes at Illuminate with Dr.
Jolivette (April 6); Holly P.’s Poetry Game Workshop (April 16); a reading with Holly P.
and Dan Close (April 29); and regular meetings of the SBPL poetry group.
• Kinetic Sculpture (April): South Burlington artist and educator Katie O'Brien will be
working with SB middle and high school students to make a kinetic sculpture over the
course of the month.
• Afternoon Games at the Library (May 16)
• June events: Summer reading program’s 2024 theme is “Adventure Begins at Your
Library.” Planning is beginning for Juneteenth events.
• Baby goats: Date and details are forthcoming for an event involving baby goats in the
children’s section.
Other topics discussed included:
• Social Work intern: UVM article on social work intern’s library placement came out on
March 21. Rebecca S. shared it with The Other Paper for possible placement and
amplification for the library.
• Communications intern updates: No one from the city/police department has
responded to Jennifer M. about sharing a communications intern across departments.
The committee discussed connecting with UVM’s College of Arts and Sciences and
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences about their internship programs. The committee
acknowledged and discussed the difficulty of not wanting to overburden library staff
with supervising interns.
• Jennifer M. requested feedback on new sharing function in library newsletter. Rebecca
and Holly mentioned they do not currently receive the newsletter.
• Rebecca S. and Holly P. met with staff member Julia, who runs the library’s Instagram.
Julia seems to have things well in hand, posting 1-2 times each week as her library hours
allow. Holly P. and Julia are coordinating taking photos for “Bookface Friday” with library
staff.
5. There was no other business. The Chair adjourned the meeting at 6:46 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Holly Painter
