The South Burlington Public Library Board of Trustees Communications Committee held a regular
meeting on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 5:30 p.m., in the Library Board Room.
Members Present: Rebecca Stazi, Chair; Holly Painter, Stacey Pape, Penne Tompkins
Members Absent: N/A
Staff Members: Jennifer Murray
1. The Chair called the meeting to order at 5:38 p.m. and provided instructions on emergency exit from
the building.
2. There were no additions or deletions to the posted agenda and no members of the public that joined
the meeting.
3. Approval of meeting minutes of January 18, 2024
Upon a motion made by Penne T. and seconded by Stacey P., the committee members voted
unanimously to accept the January 18, 2024 minutes of the Communications Committee meeting.
4. Communications Projects/Upcoming Amplification Opportunities
Committee members discussed multiple upcoming library events in February, March and April that
trustees may help promote:
• My Vermont Eyes: Trustees Donna Swartwout, Stacey and Anne Lalonde will set up refreshments for
the opening reception for the month-long program with professor, writer and poet Dr. Jolivette.
Rebecca to email her contact at UVM and reach out to the Mosaic Center.
• Chair Rebecca suggested that a photo of the dog who listens to the young readers would be a good
item to promote the wide range of happenings at our library.
• Wheels are in motion to develop a story about Evelyn, the UVM social work masters student who
has been interning through Howard Center in the library for the past few months.
• Librarian and musician Lois Price will present a multi-month program on Women Composers of Old
For Illuminate Vermont, which is happening April 5 and 6, the weekend before the total eclipse, trustees
will be asked to help with a few activities. Visitors to the library will be asked to answer the question
“why do you love the library?” with a whiteboard for writing their answer. And we will take photos of
them with their answer. Details will be worked out during the March meeting. We also want to order
more “read Local” clings to be able to give them out during Illuminate. Information about giving to the
library foundation will also be available and people will be encouraged to sign up for the library monthly
newsletter.
National Library week is April 7-13 with the theme: Ready Set Read. During that week, on Tuesday April
9, the author of the Vermont Reads 2023 novel Last Night at the Telegraph Club Melinda Lo will join a
National Book Award finalist in conversation at the auditorium. This special event is being well
promoted by the Vermont Humanities organization and is a joint program of our library, Brownell
Library and the National Book Foundation.
April is also National Poetry month. Trustee Holly P. will be presenting 2 programs: an interactive one
and a reading later in the month.
5. Communications Intern Follow up
Following the January meeting, Rebecca shared the Fletcher Free Library description of an intern
position. Jennifer reported that the police department and city communications director discussed the
possibility of sharing a communications intern (possibly from Champlain College) with multiple
departments. If the idea goes forward, the library might get some help.
6. Communications Planning
Future ideas for author presentations or a Moth style story slam were raised.
7. Adjourn: Seeing no other business, the Chair adjourned the meeting at 7:04 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Penne Tompkins
