City Council Resolution Honoring Helen Riehle for
Her Years of Service to South Burlington
February 20, 2024
Whereas, Helen Riehle will complete her fourth and final term on the South Burlington City Council on March
5, 2024; and
Whereas, Helen has served the people of Vermont in state and local government for 41 years; and
Whereas, Helen served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1983 to 1992; and
Whereas, Helen served in the Vermont State Senate from 1993 to 2000, and again from 2016 to 2017,
representing the Chittenden District; and
Whereas, Helen has served the people of South Burlington as City Councilor for the past 12 years; and
Whereas, Helen was first elected to the South Burlington City Council in 2012, and served as the City Council
Vice Chair until 2016; and
Whereas, Helen was appointed City Council Chair in March 2016 and served until March 2024; and
Whereas, Helen championed the development of City Center, including the construction of the Library and
City Hall; and
Whereas, Helen was instrumental in creating the TIF district and the affordable housing trust fund; and
Whereas, Helen guided the City Council in adopting policies and regulations that balanced protection of the
environment with necessary growth.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the City Council, do hereby honor Helen Riehle in recognition of her
four decades of dedicated service and offer our sincere thanks and appreciation for giving the City of South
Burlington the benefit of her time, wisdom, and good humor.
