HomeMy WebLinkAboutDraft Minutes - Steering Committee - 01/22/2020STEERING COMMITTEE January 22, 2020 The South Burlington Steering Committee (Joint Meeting of the City Council and School Board) met on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 6:00 PM in the Library at the Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School, 500 Dorset Street. CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: H. Riehle; Chair, M. Emery; Vice Chair, Tim Barritt, Tom Chittenden SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: E. Fitzgerald; Chair, B. Burkhardt; Clerk, A. McHenry, B. Minier ALSO PRESENT: K. Dorn; City Manager, T. Hubbard; Deputy City Manager, D. Young; Superintendent of Schools, Gary Marckres; SBSD Director of Operations and Finance, Amadee Denton; SBSD Business Manager GUESTS: 3 WELCOME H. Riehle welcomed everyone to the meeting. AGENDA REVIEW: ADDITIONS, DELETIONS OR CHANGES IN ORDER OF AGENDA ITEMS There were none. COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS FROM THE PUBLIC NOT RELATED TO THE AGENDA There were none. APPROVE MINUTES FROM THE NOVEMBER 5, 2019 STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING The Steering Committee reviewed the November 5 minutes and made a few edits. T. Barritt moved to approve the November 5 minutes as amended, A. McHenry seconded the motion. All were in favor. The motion passed. CITY COUNCIL PRESENTATION OF FY’21 BUDGET TO SCHOOL BOARD T. Hubbard presented a short overview of the FY ‘21 budget, as approved by the city council, to the school board. H. Riehle. thanked T. Hubbard for his presentation. SCHOOL BOARD PRESENTATION OF FY’21 BUDGET TO CITY COUNCIL D. Young noted that an overall objective of the board on the school budget is to ensure that we meet the Ends as related to student outcomes. The budget was presented to the city by D. Young, A. Denton and G. Marckres. The city council asked several questions. D. Young noted the school district budget can be found on the district website. H. Riehle thanked them for their presentation. UPDATE AND DISCUSSION BY BOTH THE CITY COUNCIL AND SCHOOL BOARD ON MAJOR PROJECTS’ STATUS Review Proposed School Board Bond Article (New High School and Middle School) B. Burkhardt provided an update on plans for a new high school and middle school and also provided a pre-bond update. D. Young noted that there is a lot of information on the district website regarding the bond and the plans for the new high school and middle school. There is also a project website with additional information, the address to this site is www.southburlingtonvtschools.com. There will also be several upcoming informational community meetings. The dates for these meetings are on January 30 and February 12. Both will be held in cafeteria 2 at the high school from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Tours will be provided on Tuesdays and Fridays (except 2/11) from 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. and during February break at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. each weekday at the high school. It was also noted that K. Schlenter, Principal at F. H. Tuttle Middle School would be happy to give tours of the middle school. Council members asked several questions. Several comments were provided by a community member. Update on Community Center Project K. Dorn noted that the foundation for the new municipal building is being poured and the opening date will be in the fall of 2021. There is a progress camera on top of Allard Square which allows the community to watch the progress of the project. OTHER BUSINESS There was none. ADJOURN H.
