HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Dog Park Task Force - 03/13/2018 Dog Park Task Force March 13, 2018 APPROVED Attendance: Linda Chasson, Betty Milizia, and Barbara Sirvis Regrets: Katie Lenox, Maike Uetzmann, Elizabeth Walker-Bennett, Catherine Young Staff: Maggie Leugers Meeting was called to order 5:45PM Reviewed requested sites to visit and criteria scoring. Highest score was at Veterans Memorial Park behind solar panels. Lime Kiln was small and dangerous due to cliffs. Matrix seemed to work. Betty suggested that there be consideration for Small Dog Parks verse Large Dog Parks due to size. Small dogs being 30lbs and under. Betty presented several studies of highly successful dog parks from across the country that included videos for view. It was interesting as there were several operated by City Parks and Recreation Departments but also Non-Profit organizations. Almost all shared had fees associated with them above license fees from $20 per year to $120 per year with application. Several sites installed a swipe card membership system. Purpose: to have attractive, safe Dog Parks for pets & people. Discussed that Recreation & Parks Departments across the country have user fees and having a fee for dog users would be a norm. Consideration if going this route making sure they can be accessible. Discussed setting up a scholarship system that members could donate to. Group discussed not only Dog Parks but to have Dog runs within city. Betty also discussed fundraising opportunities in memory of pets. Examples: Placing dog tags on fencing or laying bricks in specific patterns within Dog Park. Cost could range from $100-$200 each. Also getting grants and sponsorship funding to set up parks. Discussed importance of Talking Points for City Council presentation: Process will be important to inform City Council (respectful-listening, thoughtful and researching not only locally but across the country of the “best of the best” Where & What Designs Additional amenities needed Operation & Policies Education Financing Next action items: Review dog parks in Vermont and share at next meeting Meeting with BTV Gene Richards Friday March 16th.
