2. Public Comments
There were no public comments.
3. Meeting Minutes
J. Kochman mo oned that the minutes be approved for the February 16 and March 6 mee ngs. J. Chaulot seconded themo on and the minutes were approved unanimously.
4. Public Art Selection – Market Street Reconstruction Project
The committee discussed the coments from the public. They noted that in general the comments were very
positive and focused on the art. A strong component of the comments was the attractiveness of art ot families.
J. Kochman described that she traveled to Jefferson to see the silos and she spent money on dinner and time in
the local art gallery – art is important to drawing people to a community and helps the economy.
The Committee asked if there would be a press release – yes – once the Council has affirmed the selection.
The Committee also noted that all the pieces received positive comments. The press release should mention that
it was a choice between three Vermonters.
The Committee reviewed the selection criteria from the RFQ. Upon reflection on the criteria and the public
input, the clear choice is the Vendituoli proposal based on the following:
- Among the comments from the public of which there were over one hundred, numerous comments
reflected on the posi ve experience for families and children.
- Most durable proposal
- Longevity of the a rac on
- Enjoyable and engaging for all ages
- Speaks to the site
- Ar st has completed a number of other commissions and the Commi ee has the confidence that can
complete this commission.
I. Blanchard stated that the next opportunity to present a recommendation to the City Council would be May 1.
Action:
Amanda Holland made a motion to “Recommend to the City Council that they commission Tyler Vendituoli’s
geese sculpture for the Market Street project.” Jennifer seconded it
Discussion: I. Blanchard noted that prior to contract, in order to coordinate the project with the site, she would
require that the artist contract with a structural engineer to evaluate and sign off on the durability, strength of the
exterior and ability of the structure to be climbed on. The Artist would also need to coordinate with the project
team with respect placement specific to allowing or precluding access to the sculpture. Any of these could affect
the final design. This was acceptable to the committee.
The motion was unanimously approved.
I. Blanchard mentioned that the City might partner with artists to organize some type of arts event such as a
pechakucha or market.
Michele move to adjourn the meeting and the meeting was adjourned at 6:45.
