There were no public comments.
3. Public Art Selec on – Market Street Reconstruc on Project – selec ng finalists.
T. Stratmann led the discussion by suggesting that the top three artists be selected among the seven that
submitted qualifications. There was a general discussion regarding the scoring of the submittals and the
distinction between each submittal. The committee was in agreement that a piece of art that was approachable
by the public would be important for this site. The Committee appreciated that there were so many experienced
artists that had applied, especially as this is a high visibility location and only one of a very few commissioned
pieces in the City. The Committee discussion concluded with selecting three finalists: Herb Ferris, Tyler
Vendituoli, and Andrea Wasserman/Elizabeth Billings.
These three represented a good variety in styles to present to the public for feedback with extensive bodies of
public work.
4. Next Steps
There was discussion regarding whether there was sufficient direction in the Call to Artists regarding the site and
project or whether additional direction should be given. M. Bailey described a statement that was provided to
the artist who created the work for the new State building in Montpelier.
Thoughts included a phrase such as “Uplifting but blends the past with new growth, Coexists with Nature” or
impression such as “Beginning, aspirational, growth, waiting a long time”.
I. Blanchard explained per the Call to Artists, the finalists would be invited to an orientation and tour of the site
where she would provide information on surrounding projects, history of the area, the plans, and a site tour.
T. Stratmann told the Committee that she had told Judy at the Other Paper about this and hoped that the Other
Paper would cover it.
M. Bailey described a typical interview process and it was agreed that the interviews would be presentation
style.
