HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Recreation and Parks Committee - 05/21/2018 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMITTEE MONDAY May 21, 2018 5 PM-7:00 PM Medium Conference Room, City Offices Minutes Present: Mike Simoneau, Liz Robitaille, George Donovan, Paul Steinman, Linda Chiasson, Jennifer Kochman Regrets: Glenn Sproul, Kae Langrock, Rebecca Poquee Staff: Holly Baker Jennifer called the meeng to order at 5:05 Mike reviewed the safety procedures Changes or addions to the agenda: aempt to end by 6:30 Mike moved approval of minutes from April 16, 2018 meeng, seconded by George, Approved (Director’s Report: Holly · Baycrest opening is July 14. Three benches have been installed, and trees have been planted. The bridge andpathway are done. Holly suggests some fun items: Frisbee, beach balls, and maybe cookies and lemonade. Invitepeople on the neighborhood email list and FPF.· NRPA Open House: July 21 Highlight the park system. Invite people to visit 7 (or 10) city parks. Holly would like toinvite Library, Bookmobile, SBNRC, Rotary, and Rand P to staff at each locaon. “Bingo Card” could record visits,prizes can be awarded. R and P Commiee members need hats! Foundaon Update: Jennifer · The SB R and P foundaon met May 10. Membership is now eight, including Maggie, Mike, and Jennifer, and new member Linda Norris. More members are needed. The By-laws (updated from Burlington) were revised by Dan O’Rourke, and were approved by the Commiee. · The Foundaon is applying for a 501-C3, and could immediately accept a $10,000 donaon for Underwood from a friend of Paul Steinman. The R and P Commiee will decide how this money will be used.· Priories: the proposed space in City center is not a priority for the Foundaon. The Foundaon will raise moneyfor indoor recreaon facilies, with locker room, showers, etc. NRPA Presentaon to City Council: Jennifer · Jennifer thanked members of the commiee for aending the presentaon for City Council, and for the work of the Commiee on the Summary. Holly said that City Council and Tom Hubbard appreciated the clear and concise presentaon. · The 2018 NRPA Review is out, and Jennifer will send out an email for volunteers for a Sub-commiee. Senior Center/program space: Holly and Jennifer · The floor plan in the SoBu Life is not quite up to date The Senior center/R and P Program space is on the firstfloor.· Jennifer and Holly met with Jennifer Murray and Margaret Cross of the Library to begin to think about joiningefforts for advocacy. Margaret is going to the Library design meengs. Holly aends these meengs, and willshare reports with R and P Commiee. Dog Park: Minutes and sub-commiee charge: Jennifer · DP Task Force minutes aached to agenda. The PD Task Force recommends re-opening Jaycee Park dog park. · City Council charged R and P Commiee with creang a Dog Park Sub-commiee. Statement to City Council aached to the agenda. Appointments: Jennifer · Terms ending: George, Linda, Mike; all intend to re-apply. · Statement for City Council regarding appoinng commiee members: aached to agenda. Recognion for Maggie: Jennifer and Holly · Maggie is on vacaon. The Commiee would like to recognize her work as Director of Recreaon and Parks Department. Liz volunteered to work on formal recognion with the department staff to present June 18. · Jennifer may try to come up with an informal gi.· The Commiee would like to have an informal get-together dinner this summer. Name the Park! Jennifer The Commiee reviewed the five names selected from the sub-commiee, and a name was selected on a 5 to 1 vote a name to forward to CC. Liaison Reports · Bike & Ped (Rebecca) City council approved a 1 cent add-on to the property tax for 10 years at the recommendaon of Bike and Ped Commiee. The money will fund compleon of Bike and Ped projects. This will placed on the City ballot for voters. · City Council (Mike) · Natural Resources (Linda): No report· SB Land Trust: Paul has asked to be excused from the SBLT liaison. Jennifer will highlight minutes. Two Rubenstein Center student did a study on the Edlund Property and presented to SB Land Trust and will present to Planning Commission. Library Board (Glenn) No report · School Board (Liz) No report · Winooski Valley Park District (George) · Planning Commission (Kae)· Design Review/Public Art (Jennifer) The Commiee met to discuss art to be placed in the new City Center Building · Leadership (Jennifer and Mike) No report · DRB (???) No report · Energy (Jennifer, Mike) No report Meeng Adjourned 6: 30. NEXT REGULAR MEETING: June 16, 2018 5:00 P.M. We will focus on developing a year’s plan of Commiee work!
