HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Recreation and Parks Committee - 01/20/2014RECREATION AND LEISURE ARTS COMMITTEE MINUTES JAN. 20, 2014 Members Present: Glenn Sproul, Jennifer Kochman, Linda Janes, Edie Robenstein, Laura DeMaroney, Liz Robitaille Also Present; Todd Goodwin, Recreation Director 1. The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. wishing everyone “Happy New Year” 2. Minutes of December 16, 2013 meeting approved as written 3. “Recreation Wish List for City Center” was introduced by Todd. Our department has made a composite wish list following our November meeting with Lee Dore. This puts us ahead of other City Center committees, and helps Todd discuss with them. Jennifer reported that the Task Force has recognized the participation by members of our department and the Library Committee. Community members and committee members are heard by the Task Force. We brainstormed ideas for 3 wish lists for City Center: Outside area of City Center, including Dumont Park: Playground for young kids Benches (on green, along paths) Water fountains (drinking) Picnic area, with b.b.q. grills, picnic tables, pavilion, public bathrooms Off-leash area Accessible walking paths (paved shared use, boardwalk, fitness trail, etc.) “Poop” bags and trash containers Trees/shade 2 acre green space near Recreation Center Signage Inside Recreation dedicated Space within City Center Gymnasium Pool Simulated outdoor space with climbing wall 2+ rooms for fitness classes (Zumba, yoga, etc.) Office complex (bathroom, conference room, kitchenette) Changing rooms, shower Storage room in each area Classrooms for classes and meetings Ground level storage Inside-Shared with Library Space Multi-purpose rooms of different sizes for seniors, teens, adults, young kids, tots (of different sizes) Performance space Kitchen and dining area Kid drop-off space Maker’s space Classroom, including C.O.W.S. Reception area (foyer, bathrooms, display, exhibits) 4a. Todd presented his director’s report of programs, the Recreation and Leisure Arts department, and a staff review committee. The So. Burlington Recreation and Parks Mission, Vision, and Values document was included. There wasn’t a facilities report. We agreed to adopt “We the Recreation & Leisure Arts Committee, feel at this time our committee should be removed as the “Main Committee Assigned”, to the following SusAg Interim Zoning items; SA-13-15-Inventory public lands for community gardens, SA-13-20-Work w/TV Community Gardens on gardening opportunities, and SA-13-27-Work w/UVM Master Gardeners to increase gardening knowledge. We feel at this time our committee cannot take these on due to the makeup of our members and other items that are taking priority for our committee” to be presented to the Staff Review Committee. 4b. Jennifer presented notes and minutes from the January 8, 2014 Natural Resources/Open Space Committee. 5 Glenn and Elaine Dates, Chairperson of the Library Board met to begin discussions about shared Rec and Library Space in the City Center. 6.
