1. Call to order
Trice Stratmann called the mee ng to order at 6:05 PM.
2. Public Comments
There were no public comments.
3. Public Art Presentation – Sobu Spaces 2020: Library + City Hall
Ilona Blanchard provided an orientation on the Sobu Spaces 2020: Library + City Hall project and the funding
status. This project is estimated to have a public art budget of approximately $70,000 between the two uses.
She explained a spectrum for incorporating arts into the project; i.e. commissioning artists as part of design
process to commissioning art for a specific site within the completed project. Funding for the construction of the
project will not be set until a positive public vote (anticipated in November of 2018) and the art itself cannot be
commissioned until then.
Steve Roy and Caitlin Bullock walked the committee through the design options for the building, discussing
public space features for each.
The members discussed some of the options for incorporating art into the project. Penne Tompkins mentioned
the story doors that were commissioned for one of the projects that Humphries Poli presented. In that case, the
doorway was a custom size. Michele Bailey and Jennifer Kochman discussed the public art on the stairway at
the new State Health and Human Services building.
The Committee discussed integration of art into the building and functional items.
Michele Bailey asked if some funding could be used during the design process so that installed art would not
require redesign of construction documents in order for a piece to be integrated into the building.
Ilona Blanchard stated this was a possibility.
The committee asked that Humphries Poli provide pictures of how art has been incorporated into projects that
they have worked on.
The Committee decided to meet again in March to discuss options for commission art/artists to create art.
4. Other Businesses
Amanda Holland noted that in the Pedestrian Bicycle Committee meeting, there had been a presentation on the
Gotcha bikeshare program and one of the proposed sites in South Burlington is the public art area on Dorset
Street at the corner with the new Garden Street. She wondered if it was something the committee would want to
look at a later meeting. Ilona Blanchard said that she would check with city staff liaising with CCRPC on that
project to see who might be able to provide information.
5. Adjourn
Amanda Holland moved to adjourn the meeting and the meeting was adjourned at 6:45.
