Outreach Appealing to People’s Values:
Keith sent a link to a papers that addresses framing our outreach to appeal to people’s values. This is a
very challenging concept because you must understand what common set of values your target
audience share.
Our Outreach for the Prize attempted to address this somewhat by appealing to people’s emotions and
values such as pride in our community and our children and grandchildren’s futures. As we continue to
reach out to South Burlington residents to convince them that they can and must act to reduce fossil
fuel use perhaps we try to discern other values to appeal to. In more traditional Vermont community’s
values like frugality, avoiding waste, reuse when possible would apply but would those apply to our
South Burlington community?
CityFest: The rotary has asked us to participate and to invite all of our energy partners to the Vendor
tent for this year’s CityFest on August 12th. Don will poll members to see who can help organize the
event and staff the booth.
Single Trash Service for Each Neighborhood: Discussed Tom Chittenden’s idea to reduce the number of
trash haulers going through the same neighborhood. In general the committee liked the idea of reducing
the noise and fuel use that would result from having a single hauler per neighborhood. Marcy will invite
Tom to our next meeting for a more detailed discussion, At that time we can make a decision whether
the committee will support the proposal to the City Council.

CCRPC Solar Siting: Sam gave an update on his work with Paul Connor and the CCRPC on finding a
workable approach for determining “Preferable” solar siting locations. Key issues are: whether to have
specific addresses for preferable sites or to have criteria that can be used to select those sites and would
it be up to the Energy Committee or the Planning Commission to work out the details. There is more
work to do but it seems Sam has been making good progress with all the appropriate parties.
It was suggested that it might be a good idea to enlist students from UVM in the Fall Semester to help
survey sites (like roof tops) to help verify the data prepared by the CCPRC as to available sites for solar.
Proposed Change to Meeting Time: Sam has suggested that we move the meeting time to 7 – 9 instead
of 6:30 – 9 now that our project updates are taking less time. We will ask Marcy to poll the committee
on this.
