Meeting Minutes August 20, 2024

Donna called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM. The following members were present: Donna
Kinville, Peter Taylor, John Simson, Jen McClory, Chuck Rainville and Jason Kirchick attended by
Zoom. City Counsellors Elizabeth Fitzgerald and Mike Scanlon joined while the meeting was in
progress.
1. Donna welcomed new members, Chuck Rainville and Jen McClory and all members
briefly described their interest in being a Sexton.
2. Agenda Review: There were no additions or changes in order
3. Public Comments: There were no public in attendance at that time.
4. Election of Officers: Donna was elected Chair, Jason, Vice Chair and Jen, Clerk
5. Minutes: The minutes of the April 16, 2024 were approved unanimously
6. Review of May 20 meeting with City Council: Issues and requests voiced to Council
Request for additional members: Council appointed Chuck and Jen
Request to be recognized as an advisory committee: not official as of now
Request to approve burial fees: $500 resident, $700 non-resident – not
approved as yet.
Request for $1,000 for cleaning Eldredge stones: ??
In addition we raised incorporating Sextons and Cemeteries into the 2025
Strategic City Plan. Counsellor Fitzgerald stated she had asked City Manager
Baker to put this issue on the agenda for the Council retreat September 11.
Finally, we asked the City Council to review and adopt the Cemetery Rules and
Regulations drafted by the Sextons and reviewed by the City Attorney. These
would establish duties of City departments regarding burial procedures,
collection of fees etc.
7. Set date for Eldredge Cemetery Stone Cleaning: Saturday September 9:00 to 12:00
Members agreed to reach out to civic organizations and local media to generate
volunteers.
8. Other Business: Donna informed the meeting that a woman from Barre wished to bury
someone in South Burlington and was disturbed by the condition of the Cemetery. She
said she would fund an endowment of a significant amount. At this point it must be
considered a potential gift.
