HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Public Art Selection Committee - 03/19/2024 PAGE 1 SOUTH BURLINGTON PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES March 19, 2024 The South Burlington PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE held a regular meeting on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 310, 180 Market Street, and by remote participation. Members present: Penne Tompkins (Chair), John Killacky, Sebastian Ryder, Ilona Blanchard (staff, non-voting), Sophia Babbitt, Amanda Holland, Jean Sebastien Chaulot. Members not present: Michele Bailey (Vermont Art Council Representative, non-voting) and Tim Barritt (Council Liaison) Also present: Sarah Jane Kenelly, Jessica Manley Meeting convened at 5:35pm 1. Mr. Chaulot moved to approved the Feb 24 minutes. Mrs. Babbitt seconded. Unanimous approval. 2. Gallery reception: very well attended: 100 people. Mrs. Tompkins will contact the library to list our events on the library newsletter to increase event visibility. 3. Staff Report • Water towers will be turned over to the Champlain water district once built. Due to regulations, it will be challenging to have art on it according to the Director of Public Work, Tom DiPietro. Sewer, sidewalks, stormwater ponds are managed by the city and can be considered for future public art projects. • Mr. Killacky suggests that we use the $15K allocated budget and finalize the RFP. Mrs. Tompkins will work on the RFP. • Jayce Park Art increase cost will be absorbed by the city and the contract with the artist can be signed. • Illuminate Vermont: Discussion of borrowing Clay/Mohrman sculpture from BCA. 4. Curator interview: Ms. Kennelly is an artist in print making, also a photographer and works at BCA. Currently is working with the community from kids to senior citizens. Ms. Kennelly is interested in variety of medium, photography with public participation. Mrs. Manley has a list of idea of shows and artists and will pass along this information. Last show Ms. Kennelly curated was at the art-hop. She educated beginner artist to show their art and create a dynamic flow. There was 10 artists and 20 piece of art. She liked connecting the CITY COUNCIL MEETING MONTH XX, 2023 | PAGE 2 artist with the public. Ms. Kennelly is part time employed at BCA and is confident she has time to be the SB art curator. Ms. Kennelly is asking if there a core group attending shows. We do not have a existing contact list. We make sure that the opening are published are broadly as possible. Ms. Kennelly asked if we have an artist talk link to the show. This is not happening now but is a great idea and would like to explore in the future. Ms. Kennelly like the Guggenheim Museum. She grew in Rochester, NY and likes the small art gallery. Mr. Chaulot moved to appoint Sarah Jane as our next curator. Mrs. Ryder seconded. Unanimous approval. 5. Other businesses: • Jessica will check with the teachers about the date of the opening of the student show. • Mr. Killacky is stepping down from the committee as he is disappointed by the reaction of City to the cultural plan. • There are 2 vacancies in the PAC. Penne will contact Jesse Baker about early advertising. Ms. Holland is also up for renewal in 2024. • Ms. Tompkins is looking for suggestions from the committee members about predetermining the location of the art in the next RFP. 6.
