Re: DPW Updates to Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee
Since our committee meeting on June 14, 2023, I have the following updates to report on behalf of Public
Works and City staff:
• SB Bikes Out is this Thursday, August 10th as part of SB Nite Out at Veterans Park. Thank you to all
who have been involved in planning and will be volunteering.
• The Hubbard Park shared use path design is progressing and we anticipate going to bid in the
winter of 2023 with construction in summer 2024.
• Summer maintenance is in full swing. A lot of ongoing brush and tree trimming around the paths is
occurring. DPW staff are planning the key areas based on SBBPC recommendations for large
improvements.
o The stormwater crew will be replacing a culvert on Dorset Street near Veterans Park this
summer which has been causing issues with the path.
• Spear Street has been repaved from Swift Street to Pinnacle Drive. Restriping has been completed
from Swift Street to Allen Road. The centerline was shifted, and lanes narrowed to create 5-6’ bike
lanes in both directions.
• The crosswalk with RRFB at Jaycee Park is planned for installation in August/September 2023.
• RRFB upgrades continue with 3 locations remaining. These are being upgraded as timing and
weather allows.
• Crosswalk striping continues and most high-priority crossings have been restriped. This will
continue throughout the summer.
• The Dorset Street path ROW process is still ongoing. Construction is likely for 2025.
• The Spear Street path has moved into Preliminary (60%) design phase. Construction is likely for
2025 as ROW is expected to be faster than Dorset Street.
• The Bike/Ped Master Plan scope is in development with kick-off happening in September. SBBPC is
expected to play a large role in this project and serve as an Advisory Committee for the project.
2
• The crosswalks at Dorset Street/Songbird Road and Spear Street/Pheasent Way are in the FY24 and
FY25 CIPs. The Songbird Road crossing will likely occur first in tandem with the Spear Street path
so that the crosswalk will be present when the Spear Street path is constructed.
