Hi Kyle,
Yep – that looks fine. Last thing: City Ordinance prohibits the construction of chain link fences with “the open loop at the
top of the fence”, so the tops of chain link fences must either have closed loops or a top rail that covers any open loops
– the idea is that jagged/sharp edges at the top of fences are dangerous and look kind of aggressive. The detail sheet
provided does not clearly demonstrate where this standard or not. Please confirm that the proposed fence will comply
with the standard prohibiting the construction of chain link fences with “the open loop at the top of the fence”.
Thanks,
Marty

Hi Kyle,
Thanks for your response!
We do need to see a plan the clearly shows the exact area on the property the fence is proposed to go. Our office can’t
approve loose or tentative construction plans; we have to know the exact location and dimensions of the fence before
we can permit its construction.
8 feet high is approvable, but it is the maximum height for an administratively approvable fence in the City of South
Burlington (any higher and you would need to go in front of the Development Review Board for a Conditional Use
permit). I know the application says the fence will be eight feet in height, but because your margins are so thin (even just
an additional inch is impermissible), we need to see plans showing the proposed fence and its height. For example, it’s
possible that while the roll of chain link will be 8 feet tall, the posts needed to support the fence will be taller than that,
which would exceed the height limit I mentioned above.
Finally, the fence regulations also specifically prohibit “Chain link fences erected with the open loop at the top of the
fence” so we also need to see your plans for the top of the fence to ensure that this standard is met.
Let me know if you have any questions on these submission requirements or if you would like to discuss further!
Best,
Marty

Hi Marty,
Thank you for getting back to me. I may have some of the info/answers for you.
In the application the dimensions are there for the fence (8 feet high). The fence will be located in the back of
the building (would you like a blueprint of the location or more pictures?) and will go around the compost bins
that were in those two pictures in the email, to protect from rolling everywhere and being stolen. The fence
will be made out of normal chain link fencing with a privacy tape around it to ensure it's not an eye sore.
If there is more info needed, I need I may have to reach out to our home office but does that information
work?

Hi Kyle,
I will be the point person for your Zoning Permit application going forwards – as such, I wanted to check in on the
application materials.
I see in the application file an email thread clarifying that you have the authority to sign as property owner, so thank you
for that.
I also see two photographs of your compost bins.
Unless I am missing something, I believe we still need to see the plans for the fence – specifically, where the fence will
be located on the property; how high the fence will be; what the fence will be made out of; etc.
Please reach out if you have any questions or want to discuss further!
Best,
Marty

We are working on a permit to put a fence around the compost bins at store 8448 (the attached photos are of Forest
Ave and shown as an example). The store manager has been working with Lisa from property management at RBS to
complete the permit. We are just not sure who is authorized to sign as the property owner? We do own this site. Is the
Store Manager able to sign the permit? I appreciate any insight you can provide.

The town has requested a few things and the last one I need your help with.
I just got off the phone with Lisa Johnson and she told me to ask you if I can sign as property owner because I
am an agent of the company and the Store Manager of this address. I am not sure if I can nor is she fully sure
either. Do you know if this is possible? The town needs an email/signature saying I have permission to build
this cage on their property. If you scroll down in this thread I highlighted what the town needs that I need help

Hi Kyle,
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. I hope you had a great Christmas and didn’t have to work – too much.
Anyway, attached is the plan that was provided for the fenced in area that was recently constructed at Hannaford 8351
Portland, ME. This plan was done up specifically for the Portland Hannaford, but I believe you may be able to use it for
your store. I have also attached a photo of the installed fence at Portland. This one is 3-sided with one small gate.
We paid approximately $1,800 for the drawing and about $6,800 for the fence. However, there is some concern that
people will climb over the fence and still access the compost bins, so an alternate solution may be needed to try and
deter people climbing. And, there is a small increase to snow removal costs to shovel around the compost bins; I don’t
know what the added cost for snow removal is at this point.
I am available to discuss anytime this afternoon (after 1:30) or anytime tomorrow. After you have taken a look at these
attachments let’s set up a time to talk.

Hi Lisa,
Looking at it now, I will need help with the rendering. The dimension are 26' long X 9' wide and an 8' tall fence.
The fence will only be three sided because it will be up against the building. We will have about the same 35-
40 bins store in the areas. Both ends will open so they can feed them in one end and then out the other for
pick up.
If you have time next week and want to give me a call so we can talk in more detail that would be great. My

Hi Kyle
Did you get a rendering done of the fenced in area? I just recently installed one at 8351 Portland ME and had a spec
drawing done that showed dimensions (fence height etc) and how it would be installed. Do you know how large an area
you need? How many bins you have? The one on Portland had about 35-40 bins I think so the fence in area is quite
large.
I can provide a copy of the drawing that I have for Portland but not sure if it is what you are looking for at your store.
I believe whomever is going to install the fence should sign the permit application as agent for Hannaford. Hannaford
owns this property.
Please let me know if I can assist further.

Is there a rendering of what the fence will look like that you can provide?
We also need the signature (or letter/email) of the property owner stating that you have permission to pull this permit
