My thoughts on the questions as they pertain to the Charter Committee
What skill sets or professional backgrounds are you interested in adding to the Committee?
Applicants should have some length of residency in South Burlington and be familiar with the operation
of City government.
Do you have attendance concerns for any individuals who may be reapplying to serve?
No
Are there individuals reapplying to serve that you feel do not warrant an interview and should
be reappointed?
I think that this should be a question for the council. In some instances they might want to interview a
candidate who is up for renewal. (This answer is general and not specific to Paul’s reappointment.)

Hi Jessie,
Thanks for the note on the commiƩee appointment process. In answer to your quesƟons:
What skill sets or professional backgrounds are you interested in adding to the CommiƩee?
Anyone that has had an acƟve career or background in business would be preferred such as a
lawyer, engineer, business consultant, developer, transportaƟon specialist or finance. It would also good to
have people with experience in retail, manufacturing, planning or economics.
Do you have aƩendance concerns for any individuals who may be reapplying to serve?
None of the current posiƟons on the ED commiƩee expire this year
Are there individuals reapplying to serve that you feel do not warrant an interview and should be
reappointed? The idea is that if we have acƟve and producƟve volunteers who want to keep going, no need to
pull them in for another night meeƟng.
I have no concerns with the current commiƩee members
If you would find it helpful for me to aƩend some interviews let me know. I am away for a few weeks starƟng
the last week of May but will be back for the next ED commiƩee meeƟng in June.
Thanks,
John

Jessie,
My apologies for taking so long to respond to your email.
We have two trustees reapplying, Anne LaLonde and Margery Vogt, and I don’t feel that is necessary to have City Council
interview them. They are diligent, engaged members of our group.
As for the question around skills, below are some qualities we are looking for:
1. Ability to meet at night and attend two meetings a month (board meeting and committee meeting)
2. An organized person to help with deadlines and project management
3. Team player
4. Comfortable with personable outreach
Jennifer and I would like to attend the interviews. I am wondering if it would be possible to hold the library interviews
after 4pm on May 30th as I have an all‐day meeting (I’m trying to get out early)? If not, I will do my best to be there for
3pm.
Best,
Stacey

Hello Committee Chairs (or vice chairs) and Staff Liaisons,
As you know, with many upcoming appointments to make this year, the Council has amended their
process to interview candidates for appointments. They have established two subcommittees for this
purpose. These subcommittees will make appointment recommendations to the full Council who will
ultimately appoint each volunteer. Below is an outline of the process and some key questions for you.
All incumbents who are interested in continuing to serve are asked to reapply. The information on these
open seats and the application can be found here. The deadline for all to apply is May 18th.

Committee Chairs (assuming they are not up for reappointment – and if so, the vice chairs) and Staff
Liaisons are welcome to attend the interviews if you’d like – but are not required. The Subcommittees
are interested in hearing from you on the following questions:
What skill sets or professional backgrounds are you interested in adding to the Committee?
Do you have attendance concerns for any individuals who may be reapplying to serve?
Are there individuals reapplying to serve that you feel do not warrant an interview and should
be reappointed? The idea is that if we have active and productive volunteers who want to keep
going, no need to pull them in for another night meeting. NOTE: I will share these names with
the relevant Committee Chairs/Vice Chairs and Staff Liaisons on May 18/19.
If you could send this information to me by May 19th we can include this information in the materials for
the subcommittee’s interviews.
Subcommittee #1 is Helen, Meaghan, and Tim. They will interview candidates for:
Affordable Housing
Charter
Economic Development
Housing Trust Fund
Public Art
Library Trustees
Pension Advisory
They will hold these interviews on:
May 22nd from 4:00 to 7:00
May 30th from 3:00 to 6:00
Subcommittee #2 is Helen, Tyler, and Andrew. They will interview candidates for:
Bike & Ped
Common Area for Dogs
Energy
Natural Resources & Conservation
Recreation & Parks
Sextons
They will hold these interviews on:
May 25th from 3:00 to 6:30
May 30th from 6:00 to 9:00
Full Council – Due to their policy and regulatory nature, the full Council will interview for:
Planning Commission
Development Review Board
They will hold these interviews on:
June 5th at their regular Council meeting
Finally, while I have you, the City Attorney and I will be holding the annual Committee orientation on
July 13, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. We encourage all new and continuing committee members to
attend and ask questions! We will also record this session in case folks aren’t able to attend that
evening.
If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for all you do for
good governance in South Burlington!
