South Burlington
Multi-Site Crosswalk
Assessment
Preferred Concepts Presentation – January 11, 2023
Project Overview
•Investigate potential crosswalks
at four locations:
•Songbird Road and Dorset Street
•Nicklaus Circle and Dorset Street
•Hinesburg Road and Dubois Drive
•Pheasant Way and Spear Street
Project Schedule
•September 2022 to November 2022 –Site Visit, Data Collection, Develop
Potential Alternative Plans, Draft Crosswalk Assessment
•December 14, 2022 –Local Concerns Meeting and Alternatives
Presentation
•Preferred Concept Presentation to the Committee –January 11, 2023
•Final Study Complete –January 2023
Purpose and Need
•Purpose – Improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing busy
roads in order to access South Burlington’s expansive and growing active
transportation network that provides access to schools, recreational
areas, places of employment, retail and other attractions.
Purpose and Need
•Need
•Songbird Road/Dorset Street
•No crosswalk present.
•Critical link for students walking or bicycling to/from school.
•Critical link between recreational paths Spear Street and Dorset Street and the greater
shared use path network.
•Important connection location for Veterans Memorial Park and the C Douglas Cairns Arena.
•Inconspicuous crossing location.
•Nicklaus Circle/Dorset Street
•No pedestrian facilities for Nicklaus Circle residents to reach Dorset Street shared use path
and Wheeler Park.
•Nicklaus Circle residents cannot cross Dorset Street at Nicklaus Circle because of steep
embankment and thick vegetation on the east side of the road.
Purpose and Need
•Need
•Dubois Drive/Hinesburg Road
•The travel speeds on Hinesburg Road are a barrier for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to
cross to access public transit in the Butler Farms neighborhood or the shared use path
network.
•Intersection heavily used by pedestrians and cyclists.
•No crosswalk present.
•Critical connection point for the South Burlington trail network, including trails in the Muddy
Brook Wetland Reserve.
•Pheasant Way/Spear Street
•No crosswalk present and no pedestrian facilities on east side of Spear Street.
•Critical connection point for residents west of Spear Street to access future Hubbard Park
trails and the surrounding recreational trail network.

Songbird Road/Dorset Street
•Existing Dorset Street Conditions
•Posted Speed: 35 mph
•AADT: 9,600
•11-foot travel lanes, 3-foot shoulder on
west side
•Existing Pedestrian Facilities
•Shared use path along east side of Dorset
Street
•Shared use path along south side of
Songbird Road
•Songbird Road path provides connectivity
with existing Swift, Dorset Street
recreation paths and future Spear Street
path
•Meets warrant criteria for a crosswalk
Songbird Road and Dorset Street
Looking north from potential crosswalk location
Songbird Road/Dorset Street
•Alternative 1
•Install crosswalk with
Rectangular Rapid
Flashing Beacons
(RRFB) just south of
existing utility pole.
•Recommend crosswalk
be 10 feet wide to
accommodate all
users.
•Advanced crossing
warning signs for both
approaches.

Example RRFB
Songbird Road/Dorset Street
•Alternative 2
Recommended Alternative for Songbird
•Install crosswalk with Rectangular Rapid
Flashing Beacons (RRFB) south of utility pole.
•Bump out on east side makes crosswalk more
prominent and deters vehicles from driving up
onto recreational path.
•Recommend crosswalk be 10 feet wide to
accommodate all users.
•Advanced crossing warning signs for both
approaches.
•Improved visibility by moving crosswalk away
from the telephone pole.

•11-foot travel lanes, shoulder widths vary
•Existing Pedestrian Facilities
•Shared use path along east side of Dorset

trees
•Crosswalk on Park Road
•No pedestrian facilities on west side
•Does not meet pedestrian warrant criteria
Nicklaus Circle/Dorset Street

Nicklaus Circle/Dorset Street
•Alternative 1
Recommended Alternative
for Nicklaus (short term
need)
•Widen west shoulder on
Dorset Street 5 feet from
Nicklaus Circle to water
tower driveway.
•Advanced pedestrian
warning signs.
•Improves safety for
bicyclists and pedestrians
with a shared use shoulder

Nicklaus Circle/Dorset Street
•Draft Alternative 2
•New sidewalk from
Nicklaus Circle to Park
Road.
•Advanced pedestrian
warning signs.
•Raised median on
Dorset Street south of
Park Road.
Recommend considering
median and sidewalk in
future.

Dubois Drive/Hinesburg Road
•Existing Hinesburg Road Conditions
•Posted Speed: 45 mph
•AADT: 5,700
•11.5-foot travel lanes, 3 ft shoulders
•Existing Pedestrian Facilities
•Sidewalks on the north side of Dubois
Drive and Butler Drive
•Does not meet pedestrian warrant criteria due
to speed limit and travel speeds

•Draft Alternative 1
•Advanced pedestrian

Dubois Drive and Hinesburg Road
Dubois Drive/Hinesburg Road
•Draft Alternative 2
Recommended Alternative for Dubois
(pending future speed limit reduction
approval by VTrans)
•This option is only viable if the speed
limit is reduced to 40 and the travel
speeds are also reduced.
•Install new crosswalk with RRFB across
Hinesburg Road to tie in with existing
sidewalks.

Pheasant Way/Spear Street
•Existing Spear Street Conditions
•Posted Speed: 35 mph
•AADT: 7,900
•11-foot travel lanes, 6.5 ft western
shoulder and 2 ft wide eastern shoulder
•Existing Pedestrian Facilities
•Sidewalk on Pheasant Way
•Planned shared use facilities in the area to
the east of Spear Street
•Observations during site visit indicated low
pedestrian use. Recommend formal pedestrian
count after Hubbard Park shared use path is
complete.
Pheasant Way and Spear Street
View of Spear Street south to South Pointe Drive
Pheasant Way/Spear Street
•Draft Alternative 1
Recommended Alternative for Pheasant Way
•Widened shoulder on east side of Spear Street (6 ft).
•Advanced pedestrian warning signs.
Pheasant Way and Spear Street N
Pheasant Way/Spear Street
•Draft Alternative 2
•This option viable when pedestrian
volumes increase, which they may
do after construction of additional
pedestrian and bicycle facilities in
and around Hubbard Park
•Install new crosswalk with RRFB
across Spear Street to tie in with
existing sidewalk on Pheasant Way.
Pheasant Way and Spear Street N•Install new sidewalk on east side of Spear Street to connect crossing to South Pointe Drive.
West side sidewalk possible although there are significant utility issues that would need to
be addressed.
Recommend sidewalk and crosswalk once minimum pedestrian crossing counts are met.
