Penne Tompkins called the meeting to order at 1:11 p.m. and agreed to take notes.
This meeting was held to allow Public Art Committee members to give input to the East/West
pedestrian bridge project team on their phase 3 draft presentation. The meeting began with all
attendees introducing themselves., followed by a presentation from the project team.
• Aaron Guyette from VHB reviewed feedback from Workshop 2 and the teams review process that
led to the development of this concept which is a combination of the Land and Modern bridge
concepts from the 2nd workshop.
• Etty described how the current design incorporates the feedback from the early workshops and
input from both the public and stakeholders.
• Tyler described the public art elements proposed from the tumbling leaves respite overhangs to
birds in the landscape/garden sections on the main bridge and possibly three dimensional geese
“flying” along the sides of the pathway walls leading up to the bridge.
Committee members asked questions about the bridge and pathway, as well as commented upon the
design. The team explained that the bridge is higher on the south side because of information they
learned about prevailing winds in this area.
John Killacky asked the team to confirm that the entire bridge and pathway will be ADA compliant.
John raised a practical question as to whether there would be the possibility for icicles to form on the
overhang leaf shapes in our very cold winters which could be dangerous if they broke off and fell on
people.
Overall the committee appreciated the thoughtfulness of the team in considering some of the
committee’s previous feedback and complimented them on the way the current proposal would create
an iconic “gateway” statement for the city of South Burlington.
Other business:
Committee members confirmed that we will present at the November 30, 2022 City Council meeting
regarding committee requests for ARPA funds.
Meeting adjourned at 2:10 pm.
