Purpose and Need
•Purpose – Improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing busy
roads in order to access South Burlington’s expansive and growing active
transportation network that provides access to schools, recreational
areas, places of employment, retail and other attractions.

•No crosswalk present.
•Critical link for students walking or bicycling to/from school.
•Critical link between recreational paths Spear Street and Dorset Street and the greater
shared use path network.
•Important connection location for Veterans Memorial Park and the C Douglas Cairns Arena.
•Inconspicuous crossing location.
•Nicklaus Circle/Dorset Street
•No pedestrian facilities for Nicklaus Circle residents to reach Dorset Street shared use path
and Wheeler Park.
•Nicklaus Circle residents cannot cross Dorset Street at Nicklaus Circle because of steep
embankment and thick vegetation on the east side of the road.

•Dubois Drive/Hinesburg Road
•The travel speeds on Hinesburg Road are a barrier for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to
cross to access public transit in the Butler Farms neighborhood or the shared use path
network.
•Intersection heavily used by pedestrians and cyclists.
•No crosswalk present.
•Critical connection point for the South Burlington trail network, including trails in the Muddy
Brook Wetland Reserve.
•Pheasant Way/Spear Street
•No crosswalk present and no pedestrian facilities on east side of Spear Street.
•Critical connection point for residents west of Spear Street to access future Hubbard Park
trails and the surrounding recreational trail network.

Scope:
WSP has been asked to explore lighting improvements to better serve the needs of
bicyclists and pedestrians using the multi-use path that runs parallel to Kennedy
Drive.
