HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Public Art Selection Committee - 06/21/2022Public Art Committee Approved Meeting Minutes June 21, 2022 Attendees:Penne Tompkins (PT), Jessica Manley (JM),Jean Chaulot (JC), Amanda Holland (AH), Sophia Babbitt (SB), Ilona Blanchard (IB) (Staff), New appointment: John Killacky (JK), joined committee PT called the meeting to order at 6:32 PM SB confirmed to take minutes No changes to the agenda. No public comment. Minutes: Review and approve May 17, 2022 minutes - ACTION ●PAC updated one small grammatical change to 5/17/22 Minutes ●JM approved, JC second, PAC motion carried. Chair’s Report (Penne) ●IB/SB to update pics from clock event on shared drive Staff Report (Ilona) ●Result of Call ○Citywide art due May 30 - received 16-17 requests (3 submissions) ●East West Crossing Project ○Tyler V integrated into project team of consultants / participated in Bridge group (ppt and video available online) -NEXT STEPS: Update late Aug/early Sept ● ○JK worked in Minneapolis - 1988 opened sculpture garden - commissioned 2 artists bridge/poem and will send PAC photos Public Gallery (Penne/Ilona) ●Curator Update ○Daniel, curator, resigned ■NEXT STEPS: PT to reach out to Daniel to confirm/ask if he will meet w/ scheduled artists to take their work down ○Dorene Schmid from Manchester, VT, submitted NEXT STEPS: PAC to interview her end of month (need quorum to interview her) ●PT to email Doreen best times to interview (when she is back from Italy) ○Question asked if the Curator position will be re-posted? Question asked if it would be a conflict of interest if someone on the PAC was to do it? ○JM/JK to review received applications NEXT STEPS: ■IB to share gallery applicants and list of South Burlington artists ■PT to update Trice to see if she wants to join JM/JK Public Art Web pages – Approve (Amanda/Jessica) ●PT confirmed AH is approved to move forward with Public Art Pages -NEXT STEPS: The one page surrounding the gallery still needs to be updated ●Confirmed to remove content of resigned curator, Daniel. ●JM to oversee direct correspondence of artist submissions ○IB to send admin/pw for her to operate the gallery e-mail. Workplan FY 23 (July – June 2023) – Discussion ●PT advised we need to schedule the dedication of “The Gooses” ●South Burlington cultural plan - guide future investment programming on comprehensive plan update ○IB provided a summary of what had been provided to the City Administration and for the policies, priorities and strategies; then the committee reviewed the FY 22 workplan progress.PAC collaborated and updated next steps on Workplan ○Question asked if performing art/cultural art is incorporated in the Workplan? ●PAC to support how to move forward with cultural plan ○NEXT STEPS: Identify resources, how to divvy-up funds ○Question asked if there is a way to finance hiring a consultant to do the cultural plan? ■IB suggested the public art committee: ●Develop a scope and budget for costs involved ( $50K has been suggested to the administration), issue a RFQ, contract with consultant and initiate project. ●NEXT STEPS: PT to ask Michelle (cc: JK) to send the state of VT list of orgs Discussion and possible action - Call to Art (See Google Drive link above) ●PT advised PAC has about $10K in funding - the Call to Art closed on 5/30 ●Clarified this is a call for art outside of city center - for commissioning art ●NEXT STEPS: IB to reach out to artists to see why they did not submit. ●JM confirmed she is not on BCA board - she contracts with them on special projects ●Stressed how artists need to be diverse ○It was advised that the language of BIPOC should be included in “the call” criteria IF PAC is seeking BIPOC representation in selection of artists from the Call to Art. Call was advertised specifically to BIPOC artists and groups. ●NEXT STEPS: A working group needs to be confirmed ○PT, JK and AH volunteered Interim meeting next week (details TBD via email): Next meeting: Tuesday, July 19, 2022 Following meeting: Tuesday, August 16, 2022 to be discussed if canceled (PT not available) Meeting adjourned at 8:29 pm.
