HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - City Council - 06/01/1987CITY COUNCIL ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING 1 JUNE 1987 The South Burlington City Council held an organizational meeting on Monday, 1 June 1987, at 7:30 pm, in the Conference Room, City Hall, 575 Dorset Street. Members Present Michael Flaherty, Paul Farrar, George Mona, Francis X. Murray, Molly Lambert Also Present William Szymanski, City Manager; Wendy Schroeder, Business Manager; Margaret Picard, City Clerk/Treasurer; Richard Ward, Zoning Administrator; Albert Audette, Street Dept; James Goddette, Fire Department; Mike Donoghue, Free Press Election of Officers Mr. Szymanski opened the floor for nominations for Chairperson. Mr. Murray nominated Mr. Farrar. Mrs. Lambert seconded the nomination. There were no further nominations. In the vote that followed, Mr. Farrar was elected 4-0 with Mr. Mona abstaining. (Mr. Mona indicated his abstention was based on the feeling that longevity in the position might not be the best thing, not on any belief that Mr. Farrar had not done a very able job. Mr. Murray then nominated Mr. Flaherty for Vice Chairperson. Mr. Farrar seconded. There were no further nominations, and Mr. Flaherty was elected unanimously. Mr. Murray nominated Mrs. Lambert for Clerk. Mr. Flaherty seconded. There were no further nominations, and Mrs. Lambert was elected unanimously. Set time and place for regular meetings Mr. Farrar moved that the City Council continue to meet the first and third Mondays of the month at 7:30 pm, and that 3 meetings be held in the 3 grade schools, as in 1986, with possible other locations to be considered. Mrs. Lambert seconded. Motion passed unanimously. Appointments to be made by majority vote of the Council, City Charter, Chapter 3, Section 301(2) Mr. Szymanski read the list of appointments: City Treasurer and Trustee of Public Funds (currently held by Margaret Picard; City Attorneys (currently the firm of Spokes, Foley & Stitzel), Grand Juror and City Agent (currently held by William Szymanski); Zoning Administrative Officer (currently Richard Ward); Auditors (Sullivan, Powers, & Co. appointed by the Council 4/13/87 to audit fiscal year 1986-87 - final year of 3-year contract); First Constable (currently Donald Lavalette); Second Constables (currently Daniel Wright, Richard Carter, David Lavalette). All incumbents have expressed willingness to continue in their positions. Mr. Farrar moved the Council make appointments as outlined and read by the City Manager. Mr. Murray seconded. Motion passed unanimously. Mr. Mona requested that the appointees make quarterly reports to the Council. Other members agreed this would be a good idea. A regular City Council meeting followed.
