Dear Development Review Board,
We would like to remove trees from the Dorset Commons property that we purchased late last summer. We identified a number of trees that are very close to the buildings, and overhanging
them, and some are damaged or decaying. I did meet with your city arborist to review the trees we had marked for removals. He concurred with our plan and made me aware of the need to
submit this application.
We are aware there was an issue previously related to five trees that were taken down between Dorset Commons and its northern neighbor, Town Square, in 2008 without approval. This resulted
in a requirement to plant screening arbor vitae where the five trees were located. Our working through the development process is our attempt to alleviate any concerns.
Our situation is a bit different than the previous owners, in that we are not planning to remove trees near the property lines, almost of the trees to be removed fall within the “ring”
roads circling the apartment buildings. During discussions with your Development Review Planner, Ms. Keene, we now understand that though the trees were never ‘planned’, the site plan
documenting the existing trees as developed 10 years ago by TJ Boyle Associates, has become the site plan for development purposes. In the site plans you will notice 294 trees identified,
and then the area around the circle road is marked. The plan delineates canopy density in the perimeter ranging from 10-45%, as well as a conservation area and pedestrian easements.
We are requesting to remove a small fraction of the total forested area.
Our central mission as an organization is to provide affordable housing to the residents. While removing the trees has some cost, it will help increase the longevity of the buildings,
particularly the roofs and the siding. It will also be safer for the residents with less risk of limbs falling and help us maintain the property. It optimizes the cost as it becomes
one larger project than the 100 smaller ones that may occur over the next decade that may result due to snow, wind, and ice.
We respectfully request permission to remove the designated trees to help maintain our property.
Sincerely,
Chip Patullo, CEM
