HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Cemetery Sextons - 12/07/2021South Burlington Cemetery Sexton Meeting Minutes December 7, 2021 Donna called the meeting of the South Burlington Cemetery Sextons to order at 6:00 PM. The meeting was held at via GoToMeeting with all members present (Donna Kinville, Peter Taylor, Christopher Thrane and Maureen O’Brien). I. Review of Agenda– Peter asked to add cemetery fences to the agenda. II. Comments and Questions from the Public – There were none. III. Approve minutes of 9 Nov 2021 – Peter made a motion to approve, Chris seconded and all voted in favor. IV. Continued Discussion on next steps – a. Prioritizing cemetery issues i. Cemetery Head Stone Straightening – Maureen reported she has been in contact with Tom Giffin, President of the Vermont Old Cemetery Association (VOCA), and they are willing to assist us next year. We will propose the 2022 dates of June 4/5 and June 11/12 to them. We will work on the Shelburne Road cemetery first and in the meantime do some prep work prior to our work date. ii. Chris reported on his research of vaults, size of plots and cost of plots. Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington has good information and a variety of pricing available to residents and non-residents alike. He will continue reaching out to other cemeteries in the area. iii. Donna shared information she had received from other Town Clerks regarding the sale of lots/plots. We will review the information and discuss at our next meeting. We need to determine the following: 1. Should be have a bill of sale/deed for the lot? 2. Who is allowed to be buried in plot? 3. Green burials? 4. Vaults or no vaults? 5. Who is contacted prior to a burial? 6. Should we issue Burial permits so we know when someone is buried in one of the cemeteries? iv. Peter had reached out to the City Council in regards the fencing at Eldridge and Shelburne Road. Helen Riehle said she had not heard back from the Airport and Jessie Baker did speak with the Highway Department and they may have some extra fencing available or will order it. Peter will continue to engage with the Council and Ms. Baker. v. Shelburne Road - The Highway Department reported that they may want to wait until Spring to repair the fence and the ruts in the road. We countered that now would be the better time, because the ground is almost frozen and in the Spring that ground will most certainly be too wet to even drive in there. V. Other Business a. The FY 2023 City budget has a $1,000 line item for the cemetery under the “Parks Department” budget. Donna will confirm that this is intended for use by the sextons and not the parks department. b. Donna and Peter will meet at Eldredge at 9 AM on 12/9 to walk the cemetery as someone is interested in purchasing plot. c. Donna will check with City Council regarding the burial policy of indigent residents of the City. d. Donna will reach out to Dubois and King (they did the mapping of the cemeteries in 2016) to see if they could/would update their report. e. Donna will ask to be put on the City Council agenda in February 2022. We will report to them what we have been working on. f. Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 24, 2022 at City Hall or via GoToMeeting. Donna made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Peter and approved by all.
