HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - City Council - 03/20/1969BOARD OF SELECTMEN SPECIAL MEETING MARCH 20, 1969 The Board of Selectmen held a special meeting at the Town Office Building, 555 Dorset Street, South Burlington, Vermont on Thursday, March 20, 1969 at 5:30 P.M. MEMBERS PRESENT Charles H. Behney, Chairman; Vincent J. D'Acuti, Walter Nardelli, Gregory L. Premo and Raymond E. Stearns. MEMBERS ABSENT None OTHERS PRESENT Henry LeClair, Town Manager, and Mr. Hugh Marvin, Chairman of the School Board. PURPOSE OF SPECIAL MEETING Chairman Behney called this special meeting to fill the appointment to the School Board as soon as possible, due to the fact that the School Board's Committee appointments are in the process of being made, and an early decision will facilitate orderly progress. MR. BERARD'S LETTER OF RESIGNATION Mr. Behney read Mr. Berard's letter of resignation from the School Board. Mr. Nardelli made a motion to accept the resignation with regret. Mr. Premo seconded the motion and it was accepted unanimously. RECOMMENDATION FROM SCHOOL BOARD ON APPOINTMENT. Mr. Marvin was invited by the Chairman to submit names of persons for consideration to fill the vacancy on the Board. Mr. Marvin presented a letter dated March 20, 1969 from the South Burlington School Board. RECOMMENDATION FROM SCHOOL BOARD, CONTINUED Mr. Behney, Chairman, read the letter, in which the School Board submitted the following names for consideration: Leslie R. Leggett, 41 East Terrace Donald E. Moser, 20 Oak Hill Drive Chairman Marvin said that both names submitted were unanimously acceptable to the School Board. SCHOOL BOARD APPOINTMENT Mr. Stearns opened the discussion, expressing his opinion that athletics and physical education in the school system should receive more emphasis and implementation, and suggested the appointee be a person orientated in that area. Mr. Behney asked for nominations. Mr. Nardelli nominated Mr. Moser and the nomination was seconded by Mr. D'Acuti. Mr. Stearns nominated Mr. Leggett and the nomination was seconded by Mr. Premo. The vote on Mr. Moser's nomination was as follows: FOR: Mr. D'Acuti and Mr. Nardelli OPPOSED: Mr. Premo, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Behney The vote on Mr. Leggett's nomination was as follows: FOR: Mr. Behney, Mr. D'Acuti, Mr. Premo and Mr. Stearns OPPOSED: Mr. Nardelli Mr. Leggett was appointed to the School Board by a vote of four to one to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Berard's resignation, the appointment to be in effect until the next election. Mr. Premo remarked that in the future he would appreciate more time in which to consider the applicants. The meeting adjourned at 6 P.M. APPROVED Gregory L.
