It brings joy to my heart with its fines lines, history and welcoming view. It won't be long before I'll see a modern box. Perhaps not? It's clear "the times they are a changin" when it comes to the new architecture of Queen City Park. I most cases, I find it contrary to the traditions which have given the park its distinctive style. I wonder at times if Charlotte is rolling her eyes. I did visit her when I ran the water system and enjoyed her company. I guess this has nothing to with the subject, but on some level it may. Many of the newer homes built in the park since I've lived here continue a tradition of New England architecture, quite different from the rest of South Burlington. I agree with those who live here say that the homes have been changing. Up to the last couple years, those changes have been minimal and don't reflect a radical movement from the past. That's no longer the case. Do you remember Pete Seeger's song — with the lines - little boxes all in a row? Now we have — big boxes not in a row not yet anyway. That's the sense I get from those new squares without a soul. I wouldn't object to if they were built somewhere else. Should I say, NIMBY? When I traveled to the lake region in Northern England, the homes and Inns were expected to keep a style that reflected the fields and farms, sheep and stone walls of the villages and holdings. There was a tradition of history and caring for the land. I know, I know — I don't live in the lake region, but I do live in a village of sorts that has kept up to now - a certain degree of style and again, tradition. I'm afraid, a sense of place is being lost. I expect when a home is be torn down and a new edifice follows, that it would incorporate — for example — perhaps wood shingles and siding and similar design as the other homes. But from what I've seen, we are moving far far away from the traditions of the lake region. I guess I'm an anachronism when it comes to change and you know something, I don't mind. In fact, I thought of using it as a bumper sticker. Actually, change is okay when it's appropriate. It all depends on where you live. I hope Charlotte's white home is not made into a box. I always image it as a hotel along with the Spiritualist Church in the green when I walk from my home with my famous dog, Herk. Ron Krupp 8 Lyons Avenue S.
