HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Dog Park Committee - 11/18/2008 DOG PARK COMMITTEE MINUTES NOVEMBER 18,2008 The regular monthly meeting of the Dog Park Committee was held on Tuesday evening, November 18, 2008 at 6:30pm in the small conference room of the Municipal Office Building. PRESENT: Lisa Ventriss, Chair; Jaime Heins,Vice-Chair;Joan Jarvis, Secretary; and Claire Williams ALSO PRESENT: Tom Hubbard, Recreation Director The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. Tom shared information from a session he recently attended at a conference, including a copy of the PowerPoint presentation on design of dog parks. Ideas taken from the presentation for consideration include: "Welcome mat"for entry area. Sell bricks for fundraising Statue, hydrant, and other structures to attract dogs to areas within park away from entry Fountain with dog height basin Future-dog wash spray area Hand sanitizer Possibility of dividing park in 2 sections so one can re-grow grass while the other is used, shift off between areas. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as written. There are now over 850 dogs registered and if license fee was raised$10 it would cover annual maintenance costs for the park. The committee reviewed the initial fmdings of Sanborn-Head site analysis. A full report will be presented at the next meeting by Matt Poirier. According to the initial review, the landfill area is a viable site for reuse as a dog park. Several questions evolved that Tom will address with Matt and report back to the committee. It appears that some additional work will be necessary to help prepare the site prior to any construction for the dog park. As discussed at previous meeting, Tom prepared a draft of a report to folks who indicated through the survey that they would like to be kept informed about the progress for the dog park. The idea is to email the"newsletter"to folks that indicated email addresses, and send out to others through regular mail. A short cover letter will be written with the newsletter update as a pdf attachment. The committee discussed the idea of an update to City Council in January. At that point, we should have the final report and conditions from the site analysis, some preliminary design concepts, a general idea of cost to build, and will seek approval from Council to continue moving forward, which will include the permitting process, and fundraising efforts. -1 Committee members felt that having cost figures by that timeframe would be reasonable. Tom distributed some additional material on several VT community dog parks. Meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m. Next meeting scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11 th. Respectfully submitted, Joan Jarvis, Secretary
