MINUTES
AUGUST 12, 2008
The regular monthly meeting of the Dog Park Committee was held on Monday evening,
August 12,2008 at 6:30pm in the small conference room of the Municipal Office
Building.
PRESENT: Lisa Ventriss, Chair;Jamie Heins,Vice-Chair; Joan Jarvis, Secretary;
Howard Goldberg, Claire Williams
ALSO PRESENT: Tom Hubbard
The meeting was called to order at 6:34 p.m.
A quick review of update survey results indicates continued overall support and the
indication that people would pay to go to dog park.
Review of National Night Out was that it was good to see the presence of the dog park
committee. This offered good exposure to the general public on the efforts of the
committee and an opportunity to begin fundraising efforts with the new t-shirts.
Tom informed the committee that there is another opportunity coming up for interaction
with the public at the fire dept. open house on September 7th 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The
committee could share a booth with the Recreation Dept. Lisa asked members to check
their schedules and email what their availability might be for that event.
Suggestion was made to have a t-shirt on display at the city clerk's area so that when
people are getting dog licenses they could see the shirts and possibly purchase one.
Fundraising:
Need to determine how much funding we need-and for what items. Possibility of
targeting companies for sponsorship.
Small dog electronics possible target to sponsor small dog area.
Claire suggested determining various levels of fundraising
Pet Stores
Animal Care Centers-Vets Offices
Doggie Day Cares
Pet-friendly businesses-Burton, Ben& Jerry's, EMS
Lisa outlined how to present to a potential donor, with a package explaining need and
outline of the project. Lisa will draft a pledge form and letter for committee review.
Some discussion was held regarding how to recognize the contributions made and
thoughts included mounting a plaque with the names of the donors at the dog park on a
large rock or some sort of natural type element.
Lisa asked Tom to review with city attorney, the language used at Starr Farm for rules
and regulations. The committee wants to keep the signage simple and the signs at Starr
Farm seem to work well.
Howard suggested starting sending an update of the progress on the dog park to the
individuals that provided information on surveys when they renewed dog licensees.
Jamie suggested that we need to get details on what we are funding.
Details on some of the costs so far:
6' cedar tree$25/ea. installed for a min. order of 25 trees
bench would be about$325
wooden bench with cement footing could be up to $500
kiosk/entrance way$1000
fence and sign for rules, grading for parking to be paid for by city
some type of shade facility will need to be determined
Tom and Lisa met with Krebbs&Lansing who will be putting together a cost estimate
for site analysis. Also discussed was the additional cost of preliminary design. Bruce
Hoar from Public Works and Lou Bresee from the Rec. Path Committee were also at the
meeting. Some concern was expressed as to what ANR will require for this site to be
allowable based on the fact that we would need to insert posts into the ground for
fencing, dogs typically like to dig holes, could trees be planted, etc. The committee was
asked to consider if the landfill site does not work out, what would be considered Plan B?
Lisa asked Tom about water access Tom felt that access could be provided from the
water quality control area. Tom said that initial conversation with Bruce Hoar to the
folks at ANR was that the landfill site in"general"is an appropriate use for the landfill.
Jamie asked if we try to determine"Plan B"now or wait until after the results of the
engineering? Lisa put on agenda for next meeting a re-review of other locations. Joan
asked when will ANR review? Tom says it will happen as part of the site analysis and
engineering review, this should be completed by fall.
Next meeting planned for September 9 at 6:30 p.m.
Meeting adjourned at 7:55 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Joan Jarvis, Secretary
