Dog Recreation Task Force
February 9th
12:00-1:00
Task Force Members: Muriel Moore, Corey Santorello, Ashley Parker (staff), Holly Rees (staff)
Not in attendance: Betty Milizia
Members of the Public in Attendance: Jean Held
Welcome: Holly and Ashley welcomed the group and reviewed how staff had gotten to this point, and
some of the general concerns of the residents. Holly stated that she gets calls weekly as to concerns
from park patrons of being jumped on and negatively affected by off leash dogs. Ashley noted the
natural resource implications of loose dog excrement and off trail exploration on our more sensitive
open space areas.
Introduction: Each member introduced themselves, stated their committee or personal interest at
stake.
Individual Goals: Each person reviewed their goals of what they hope to gain from this task force.
Collectively the group identified loosely that the goal was “to provide guidance on how South Burlington
could be an open and welcoming dog positive community that would support all patrons in feeling
valued and safe when visiting the parks system” The work of the task force will be to lay out scenarios
to present to the City Council to support this initiative; being creative in utilizing the resources already in
place as well as detailing any additional resources needed to accomplish this goal.
Availability: The group agreed that a once a month meeting was a schedule they could commit to. The
second Tuesday of each month, virtually at noon was put into place as a standing meeting.
Review of Staff Document: We reviewed the initial staff document which lead to the joint committee
meeting in October. There were no questions and no additional suggestions offered to the frame work.
The group agree to accept the frame work as the guiding document to their work.
Next Steps: The group decided that the next meeting would be Tuesday March 9th, 12:00-1:00 and that
the agenda should be focused around current ordinance review.
