Each letter separately molded and attached to the building is the only type sign which we will accept as a cut-out letter sign. Using the cut-out letter formula, the business in question would be allowed two (2) signs at a maximum of sixty-six (66) square feet. The type of sign that you have proposed is not defined as a cut-out letter and therefore, the maximum size allowed is reduced to thirty three (33) square feet. Burlington, VT 05403 RE: Sportshoe Center, Blue Mall, Dorset St. Dear Mr. Ward One of the attached drawings have been prepared for you in order to officially calculate the square footage of the existing signs on the Sportshoe Center building. The second drawing has been prepared to calculate the square footage of the proposed signage we plan to install at that location in lieu of the existing signage. According to my calculations, the total for the existing signage is 88 square feet. We are requesting that we split that total on two walls. The west wall we would allot 58 sq.ft. and the south wall 25 1/2 sq.ft. as shown. I appreciate the attention you have given this matter and would like to apply for a sign permit as quickly as possible in order to start fabrication of new signs. The maximum facade sign allow using cut out letters is sixty (60) square feet. In a previous letter dated August 27, 1993, I advised that the maximum wall sign allowed would be sixty-six (66) square feet. A proposal for a sixty-six (66) square foot wall sign would be acceptable. I did inspect the existing sign, other than a few cracked panels, the overall sign seems to be in good condition. Also my records fail to show that a permit was issued for the banner type sign attached to the westerly side of the building. Please advise me should you require an application to replace the existing sign. ZONING ADMINISTRATOR 658-7958 wall fifty eight (58) (25) square feet is hereby The formula used to calculate any wall sign is five (5) per cent of the facade area and ten (10) percent when using cut-out letters. Given that the present sign contains eighty-eight (88) square feet is based only on the fact that the sign is individual cut out letters. Your sign proposal is not considered cut-out letters. The sign as you are proposing would be allowed, however, the maximum would be forty-four (44) square feet. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me.
