BRIEF NARRATIVE: On 04/13/2018 at approximately 9:49 PM multiple South Burlington Police Officers
responded to the area of 900 Hinesburg Road for the report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries. This crash
was initially reported as a vehicle that had struck a utility pole which resulted in people possibly being trapped
inside.
Upon arrival to the scene Officers observed a silver Honda Civic underneath half of a utility pole that was
completely broken at the base, with the upper half of the pole hanging from the utility cords above it. The
Officers observed multiple utility lines on the roadway and in the grass surrounding the vehicle. They also
observed the front of the vehicle to be completely destroyed, the airbags inside the vehicle to be deployed, and
pieces of the vehicle were strewn about.
As Officers began to secure the scene and ensure the safety of the victims of the crash it was determined that
Sheridan Durochia, 21, of Colchester, Vermont had been operating the vehicle at the time of the crash. While
speaking to Durochia Officers observed a strong odor of intoxicants emanating from his person as well as
bloodshot watery eyes and a slurred speech. Durochia was subsequently transported to the University of
Vermont Medical Center for treatment for facial injuries. The 23 year old male passenger complained of back
pain as a result of being in the crash and was also transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center for
further treatment.
Utilizing an At-Scene Crash Reconstructionist it was determined that Durochia had traveled approximately 238
feet off the roadway before coming to an uncontrolled rest as his vehicle struck the utility pole, breaking it off
at the base. It is estimated that Durochia may have been traveling at speeds up to 90 miles per hour just prior
to the crash.
A search warrant for Durchia’s blood in order to determine his blood alcohol concentration at the time of the
crash was applied for, granted, and executed. Driving Under the Influence charges are pending the results of
that blood sample.
The area of Hinesburg Road in which the crash occurred was closed until the early morning hours of 04/14/2018
as utility crews worked to repair the broken pole and secure the downed wires.
