Dear Marla
We are writing in regards to the extension of Cider Mill Drive to Sommerfield Ave within the Cider Mill I development. This
connection was not part of the completion of either Phase I or Phase II of Cider Mill. This was confirmed to us by Peter
Kahn as a representative of the developer and also the City of South Burlington prior to us purchasing a lot on
Sommerfield Ave north of Braeburn in 2015. We were told by the City of South Burlington that the extension would not
happen until the land north of the solar panels was developed which would probably not be for about 10 years as no plan
has been submitted to date; it was NOT part of the completion of either Phase I or Phase II of the Cider Mill development.
There is also a wildlife path on the North side of where the extension is in the plan (see attached photos). We have not
heard of this path being discussed. It has been here for years. We oppose the completion of the extension due to:
1. The disruption and disturbance of the wildlife using this path.
2. The disruption of wildlife within the wetlands including peepers. As residents, we are not allowed to disturb the
wetlands in any manner in order to preserve the life within.
3. The continuation adding to disruption of all life due to speeding along the straight-a-way created by the Cider Mill
Road; which is basically a straight-a-way from Crispin Drive down. The extension will only add to the speed. Stop signs do
not work in the development. The majority of people driving in the Cider Mill (residents, workers, visitors, school buses,
etc.) do not adhere to a safe speed limit nor do they stop at stop signs or crosswalks for people of all ages crossing.
4. The streets within Cider Mill I are designed with curves and turns to slow traffic; with the exception of Cider Mill Road
AND Sommerfield Ave. There is nothing to slow increased traffic on Sommerfield Ave as it is basically a straight-a-way. As
mentioned above, drivers do not pay attention to the stop signs. In the summer months, we have drivers flying by on the
straight Sommerfield Ave, and leaving skid marks. Children playing outside will be at extreme risk.
5. Finally, as described in the letter dated July 31, 2018 from O'Leary Burke Civil Associates on behalf of the developer, the
extension of Cider Mill Rd to Sommerfield Ave is totally unnecessary for the completion of Cider Mill Phase II. The sole
purpose is to provide an east-west connector through the neighboring Marceau Parcel from Dorset St to Hineburg Rd not
to alleviate traffic impacts from the Cider Mill Phase II development.
Sincerely,
2
