HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Dog Park Committee - 01/22/2008 DOG PARK COMMITTEE MINUTES 01-22-08 The first meeting of the newly appointed Dog Park Committee was held on Tuesday evening, January 22nd at 6:30pm in the small conference room of the Municipal Office Building. Members Present: Lisa Ventriss,Joan Jarvis, Jaime Heins, Claire Williams, Lori Valburn, Howard Goldberg Also Present: Tom Hubbard, Recreation Director; Chuck Brodsky, Guest Members were welcomed and introduced, sharing some brief remarks about themselves, their pets, and their interest in serving on the committee. Tom distributed a current member roster with contact information, and this list will be attached to the minutes of the meeting. After a brief discussion, members agreed to meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm as part of a regular meeting schedule. This new date was agreeable to all in attendance. Meetings will run in length from 1 Y2-2 hours and members should plan accordingly. Several articles regarding dog parks in different areas of the country were distributed to members for discussion and reference. Chuck gave the committee some background on his involvement as one of the volunteers at the Starr Farm Dog Park in Burlington. Chuck is a South Burlington resident and excited about the possibilities for a dog park in our city. The committee reviewed the"charge" from City Council, and as part of the next meeting, members will develop a"scope of work" for the Dog Park Committee. Members were also asked to give some consideration to taking a leadership position on the committee, with nomination and election of a Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary to be held at the next meeting in February. Other discussion evolved and included the possibility of conducting a survey in The Other Paper;possibly a questionnaire to folks as they register dogs prior to April 1st; how many dogs are in South Burlington, and how many of those are registered; what are the current"best practices" for dog parks in this area, including what is the recommended height of fencing. Members were asked to formulate 5 questions they feel would be important to ask residents of the community relative to dog parks and share those at the next meeting. Also, if any members visit a worthwhile internet site with useful dog park information,please share the link with other members of the committee. The next meeting of the Dog Park Committee will be held on Wednesday evening, February 13th at 6:30pm in the small conference room of the Municipal Office Building.
