NARRATIVE:
On 02/01/2021 at approximately 5:12 PM South Burlington Police received multiple reports of gun shots
occurring at the University Mall. This incident triggered a mutual aid response which involved
Burlington PD, Winooski PD, Williston PD, UVM PD, Vermont State Police, ATF, and was supported by
South Burlington Fire & Rescue.
During the initial response officers were able to discern that the shooting occurred as a result of dispute
amongst a group of people in the mall, this was not an active shooter scenario. The dynamics of the
incidents forced several shoppers to flee the property causing a great deal of traffic congestion and
confusion.
Responding officers formed teams in order to search the property for suspects or injured parties. After
an exhaustive search it was determined that the suspects had successfully fled the scene and that there
was one injured person on site. The injured person was a young male who was not involved in the
shooting incident, he was an innocent bystander. The injured male was taken to UVMMC for treatment
of a minor projectile injury.
Detectives are working a variety of leads to include video evidence. This investigation is still in a very
preliminary stage, more details will be shared as information develops. Anyone that has information
