Whipple, Chief of Police SOUTH BURLINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE Phone: 846-4111 INCIDENT #: 18SB007280 Fax #: 846-4102 INVESTIGATING OFFICER: Officer Crispin DATE/TIME: July 2, 2018, 1800 hours INCIDENT TYPE: DUI with serious bodily injury resulting, Gross Negligent operation with injury resulting, Leaving the scene of an accident, Resisting Arrest. BRIEF NARRATIVE: On July 2, 2018 at about 1800 hours, numerous officers responded to the intersection of Kennedy Drive and Hinesburg Road for a four-vehicle crash with the primary operator fleeing from the scene. Upon arrival, the operator was being detained by an out of state officer about 100 yards from the crash site. Initial investigation determined Operator #1 who was identified as Trevor Cayia (34 years of age from South Burlington) was operating westbound on Kennedy Drive approaching the intersection of Hinesburg Road and was not slowing down. He impacted vehicles stopped at the intersection which created secondary crashes and injuries. Two individuals were transported to the emergency room for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Traffic was affected for approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes as the accident was investigated. Alcohol was immediately identified as being involved in the crash. However, Cayia refused all tests at roadside. In addition, Cayia actively resisted officers as they tried to take him into custody for the DUI and leaving the scene of the accident. Cayia was lodged at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Center on $7,500 bail for the above-mentioned charges. In addition, his vehicle was seized in order to obtain a search warrant for additional information. He is scheduled to appear at Chittenden Superior court on July 3, 2018 to answer to the above charges.
